Chapter 11

During warmups, each team stays on their end of the ice participating in warmup drills. First, we skated in a circle from behind our net out to the center line. The other team was doing the same thing, so I passed Tyler a few times but he refused to look at me. I wanted to talk to him before the game started.

I got my chance during goalie warmups, where we formed two lines, taking turns skating in on the goalie with the puck and taking a shot. After I took my shot and went to the end of the other line, Tyler was there at the end of his line, just across center ice.

I skated to him and stopped right in front of him.

“What’s going on?” I said, keeping my voice low because I knew there were parabolic microphones in the stands, capable of picking up sounds from the game.

He stared at me, but didn’t reply.

“This is about Sarah, isn’t it?”

I saw the anger fill his face. “Of course it’s about Sarah, you fucking idiot.”

“What did she tell you?”

“She didn’t tell me anything. Lori called me and told me what happened. How she came downstairs and found you two with your tongues in each other’s mouths and your hands in each other’s pants.”

“That fucking bitch,” I muttered.

“So you’re not denying it? I asked Sarah about it, and she told me to mind my own fucking business.”

“No, I’m not denying it.” Actually, I was a bit relieved that he just knew about us making out, and not the blowjob that came later.

“Fucking asshole,” he spat. “That’s my fucking sister, not some hockey whore.”

“I know that,” I said. “If you’d just give me a chance to explain.”

“There’s no explanation, Luke. You crossed a line. We’re not friends anymore.”

“Tyler, please.”

“Hey, Stratton! What the fuck are you doing?”

I turned to see our captain, Gabriel Landeskog, glaring at me.

“You’re on this team. Get the fuck over here!”

I turned back to Tyler. “We’ll talk more after the game.”

“Fuck you,” Tyler replied. “And watch your back.”

“Do you want to spend the game on the fucking bench?” Landeskog shouted. “I said get over here!”

I skated back to my captain. “Sorry,” I said.

He leaned out as I skated by, putting his shoulder into mine and almost knocking me off balance.

“Get your fucking head in the game, rookie. Head in the game.”

I got back in line, taking a few more shots on our goalie. As we did our final few laps before heading back into the dressing room, I glanced up into the stands where the seats I’d gotten for my parents and the Cains were. Dad and Mom were sitting next to Mr. and Mrs. Cain, with Sarah in the aisle seat. She was looking at me with concern in her eyes, and I quickly looked away.

In the locker room, Coach Bednar asked me to step into his office.

“You having a problem, Stratton?” he asked as I closed the door.

“No, Coach.”

“McFaddon showed me the interview you and Cain did.
